The Baby Welfare Centre was started in the year 1939, by Dr.Sadagopan, the then factory medical officer of Nellikuppam Sugar factory, with the sole objective of providing better nourishment to the children of the employees, and to promote awareness regarding child care, health & hygiene, nutrition etc., to the spouses of those employees working in the plant. Its Golden Jubilee was celebrated in the year 1989.
The year 2003 is it’s 64th year and the Baby Welfare Centre is still running in full swing. The aim of the Baby Welfare
Centre is to educate young mothers and also practically demonstrate to them, the care for babies and their healthy up bringing until they are three years old. Advice is given to mothers on personal and household hygiene. The basic economic factors are stressed in the proper running of the household, efficiently by the mothers, thereby relieving to a great extent the stress and strain on the wage-earning workers of the factory.
The Ladies’ club of Nellikuppam EID Parry contributes to this activity substantially by deputing two volunteers for the purpose of supervision of the above activity and gives counsel. In the first week of every year, the annual day celebrations of the BWC are conducted and the best baby contest is held. The babies are selected on the basis of their regularity, and health. The regular mother is also identified. A rolling shield is presented to the best baby. This baby is necessarily the out going baby (in the 3rd year).
